So I posted awhile back about how I got a car... In February... Well, I haven't even driven it yet.
So I figured I'd wait on registering until summer because you need insurance to register, and I didn't wanna pay for insurance I wasn't using cuz I couldn't have my car at school. So, it's summer and I was so excited about finally being able to drive it. My mom called the insurance company and I got insured, I've had my license since April, and so all that was left was the easiest part: registration. Since the guy who sold the car to me only put $100 on the Bill of Sale, I only had to pay like $7.
So I get to my sister's house with Kate (Where my car has been living) and look in the glove box and guess what? Neither the Bill of Sale or the Title are in there. I look EVERYWHERE in the car, in every knook and and cranny, and it's not there. I call Caleb, and he says he's 100% positive he put it there.
Now, one time awhile ago Mary said she walked out of the house to check on my car one time and this guy in a wheelchair who lives in her apartment building is there, all the doors of the car were open, and the contents of the glove box were on the front seat. She asks him "What are you doing?" he says "These plates don't belong to this car" (Caleb had put his old Eclipse plates on it to drive it there) and Mary was like "...Ok, well can you please not go through the car?". So he's suspect #1 on who could have stolen my title and Bill of Sale. I went to his apartment and knocked but he didn't answer. Besides, I doubt he'd just hand it over even if he DID have it. *sigh*.
So the only other solution was to apply for a new title. I downloaded the form and called the DMV about what I'd need to apply for a new title. They said I need the form and the Bill of Sale. I wasn't worried about the Bill of Sale because I could make myself one of those, so this shouldn't be that hard... But the other thing about it is the title need to be applied for by the person whose name is originally on the title...
Yeah, all I knew about this guy was that he lives in Jonhston, RI, and his first name was Matt. I didn't know his last name or his phone number. I called all sorts of people trying to figure this out. I payed $20 for the CarFax history hoping it'd give me a list of previous owners, but it didn't. I called the DMV, they said they couldn't give me that info unless I had the Bill of Sale, and in that case they'd probably recognize a fake one because it'd be all I had... So after a stressful day of looking I had the idea for Caleb to look at his Cingular bill for the day he called the guy. By process of elimination I figured out that he called him one time on February 2nd, and Caleb found the number. I called him, and he answered, and I told him the situation. His first reaction was, "Hmmm I remember selling a Jetta earlier this year, but an Accord? I dunno..." I told him when I got it, where we'd met, that Caleb had the same car, that caleb had picked it up, all that, then I asked him if he remembered now... "Vaguely...". Yeah so this guy is kind of confusing, I don't get him. How can you not remember selling a car? He said he'd check the VIN out when I gave it to him and he'd call me later that day, which he did.
He seemed to remember a bit more when he called me later. He asked me if I thought the name on the title was his name or someone named Jennifer, and Caleb said it was prolly Jennifer. Well, apparently Matt was selling this car for his friends Jennifer because she was moving to England... So he said he had to get in contact with her... He sounded like he could do that, but he said it was gunna be tough. When I told him I'd pay him for it, he was like "Well.... I'll prolly have to take a day off of work, I mean what with going to the registry and all that..." probably insinuating that he wanted a lot of money. But yeah, if he manages to get her to sign that and have it sent to me along with the Bill of Sale, I'm willing to give him at least $150, depending on how much he does for it. He said he'd call me in a few days, and that's where I am. If I can't get that title, and can never drive this car. For all they know I stole it, so it's just a hunk of metal.
So yeah now that it's finally summer I was really hoping this summer wouldn't be like last summer because I'd have a car, but it's starting to look like I'm looking at another summer of sitting at home on this machine. Blah.
All I can do is hope he calls back and says he's got it taken care of, I guess.
